Exciting Programs for Older Campers
For campers going into 3rd and 4th grade, the regular program of swimming, sports, and specialty activities is enhanced and made more challenging. This program is highlighted by swimming in our Olympic-size swimming pools, expanded sports leagues & tournaments, ceramics & pottery, evening theater performances, out-of-camp activities, horseback riding, golf program and color war.
Entering 4th grade and older Campers are also highlighted by an optional mini-sleepaway experience, out-of-camp day trips, indoor tennis and our sports specialization programs.
Our Sr. campers swim twice a day in our 2 Olympic-size senior camp pools. Our fully-certified swim staff, along with this state-of-the art swim facility, allows our older campers to continue to improve individual skills in a challenging, safe, and supported environment.
In addition, our 135 foot-long Water Park Slide adds another element of excitement to our Sr. Camp Pool Complex.
Our swim program also features:
- 40-minute swim lessons each morning.
- Small Camp Hillard Aquatics Groups organized by ability. All groups are taught by certified instructors.
- Instruction in all major strokes, diving, deep-water techniques and water safety.
Campers participate in our annual Hillard Games in which boys and girls are divided into teams. Emphasis is on fun and good sportsmanship, while at the same time providing a healthy environment for competition and camp-wide spirit. Hillard Games rotate annually and include Green & White, Olympics and World Cup Games.
Individual activities are scheduled on a choice basis where campers can spend extra time on favorite activities. These include tennis, horseback, gymnastics, aerobic boxing, archery, ping-pong, miniature golf, golf skills center and driving range, batting cages, zip line, flying squirrel, 30ft climbing wall, boxball, and ga-ga.
The sports program steps up in both quality and quantity. Sports Clinics and Sports Choice offers more advanced instruction. Boys and girls can learn the finer points in basketball, softball for girls, baseball for boys, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, football, gymnastics, and tennis from experienced coaches. Game play is highlighted by sports leagues featuring longer periods for longer games. Our emphasis is always on developing athletic skills, learning, and having fun. In addition, campers entering 3rd and 4th grade can choose to participate in our Sports Specialization Programs.
More time is also devoted to the Creative and Performing Arts so that older campers can develop more advanced projects and performances.
The PERFORMING ARTS Program features special performances combining lines, music, dance, and choreography. These shows are longer and more involved and are presented to parents during special evening performances. Shows have included Wicked, Les Miserable, Fame, Grease, Singing in the Rain, and High School Musical.
The CREATIVE ARTS Programs are more involved in terms of the projects selected and more opportunity is added to the weekly schedule. Girls are scheduled regularly for Jewelry and Bead Making, Ceramics and Pottery, Nature, and Traditional Arts & Crafts that include advanced projects such as leather crafts, drawing, painting, knitting, cartooning, T-shirt design, model making. The boys can choose these programs through our hobby choice periods.
Camp Hillard values such as getting along with others, respect for each other, being a good listener, keeping camp clean, sportsmanship, and encouraging confidence are all stressed.
Sports Specialization Programs
Campers entering entering 3rd grade and older can choose to participate in our Sports Specialization Programs. These programs allow our older campers to specialize in soccer, baseball, softball, or basketball by spending several mornings a week in advanced clinics and games. It's a great choice for those campers looking to improve for their recreational or travel teams!
Horseback Riding Program
This program allows campers entering 3rd grade and older to receive weekly formal riding instruction. The program takes place at Twin Lake Farms Equestrian Center in Bronxville.
This program allows campers entering 3rd grade and older to get formal golf instruction. Weekly lessons focus on driving, chipping, putting and golf etiquette. The program is taught by PGA club professionals and takes place at a nearby country club.
Campers who are entering 4th grade or higher can participate in an optional mini-sleepaway program. This 5-day, 4-night experience takes place at Camp Pontiac is lead by Camp Hillard staff.
Campers entering 4th and 5th grade have 2 one-day trips under our direct supervision. Campers entering 6th and 7th grade will take 2 one-day trips and a one-night overnight trip. The overnight takes place at Brookwood Camps located in the Catskills. Day trips have included professional baseball games, ice-skating, Rye Playland, Power House Studios, and trips to other popular attractions. This program is included in the regular tuition.
